MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT

Coming up with sustainable solutions for Amazon was my priority as a color materials finish designer. While it took nearly 2 years developing a textile that could give the best acoustic performance, light transparency for display performance, color adaptability and also needed to be made of 100% recycled PET from recycled plastic bottles. The double knit fabric gave a cozy home feel while providing the mechanical and technical properties to stretch over spherical and cylindrical forms.

For the injection molded plastics, it was a imperative to adapt the tooling to work with high amounts of recycled contents. I monitored and tracked the cosmetics of these materials to achieve the cosmetics design requirements and continue to providing high yield to minimize waste.

It became also important to consider the color palette to support recycled resins. The previous stark white color that had become synonymous with Amazon's hardware needed to change to a softer shade of offwhite. This allowed it to fit better with home finishes like ceramics and or marble.

All the recent Echo and Fire TV devices include 100% post-consumer recycled fabric, 100% recycled die-cast aluminum, and 30-50% post-consumer recycled plastic.
